Newly published data has revealed the average waiting time for a first appointment at an NHS adult gender clinic is five years and seven months. For many people, that’s five years and seven months of anguish, pain, fear and confusion. And sadly for some people, it could be even worse, because the report published by NHS England stated that unless improvements were made, some patients would end up waiting 15 years for their first appointment.

With that in mind, the gender specialists at Waterside Clinic are here to explain why it is vital that patients are seen quickly and how we do things differently at our trusted, supportive clinic.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment at an adult gender clinic is the first step towards getting a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria – confirmation of a mismatch between a person’s biological sex and their gender identity.

It is typically only when a person receives this formal diagnosis that they can commence their treatment journey, which may involve prescribed hormones and referral for surgery.

The impact on mental health

Having spoken to countless trans patients, we know that waiting for gender-affirming healthcare can be a lonely and anxious time. Many patients feel like their life is on hold, and the longer the wait, the bigger the impact it can have on their mental health.

Research published by Cambridge University backs this up. It shows “Longer waiting times were found to contribute to feelings of low mood and suicidal ideation, as well as decreasing overall quality of life.”

How Waterside Clinic is different

By contrast, the waiting time for a first appointment at Waterside Clinic is typically just three to four months. We understand what a hugely positive and emotional experience that first appointment can be. For some trans people, it is the first time they are seen, heard and truly understood.

And so whilst our waiting times may be relatively short, our appointments are never rushed. We give every patient ample time to discuss all their thoughts, experiences, worries, hopes and goals. We also allow plenty of time for patients to ask questions and to digest all the information needed to make informed decisions.
