For 30 years, the Edinburgh LGBTQ+ community and allies have come together to celebrate Pride in the most colourful and joyful ways. But it’s not just about rainbow flags and parades – at the heart of this event is an important message. For many trans people, it’s about visibility, representation, inclusion and so much more. So here are five reasons why we’ll be celebrating this year.
1. Visibility
The trans community still faces many hardships, from stereotypes and misconceptions, to discrimination and hate crimes. Being represented at Pride helps to increase trans visibility, which in turn can help wider society understand trans people better.
2. Inclusion
In so many areas of life, trans people are excluded or treated differently. Their opinions, needs and challenges are not given the consideration they deserve. Pride provides a valuable opportunity for trans people to feel included. It also offers a safe space for trans people to share personal experiences and validate feelings.
3. Advocacy
Great things can happen when people unite under one cause. Pride can be a powerful platform for advocating for trans rights and amplify calls for positive change.
4. Community
Pride is a fantastic way to bring the LGBTQ+ community together, so trans people can make connections, find support and enjoy a sense of belonging.
5. Identity
Pride is a unique setting where trans people are truly welcome to express themselves freely and without fear of judgment or discrimination. Many trans people’s backstories feature times when they have felt they need to hide or suppress who they truly are. At Pride, they can not only be completely open about themselves, but positively celebrate it.
