The results of Scotland’s Census 2022 have just been published and for the first time it gives us a clearer insight than ever into the nation’s LGBT+ community. Is it a sign of progress? Could it help to shape a fairer and more equal future for all? Read on to discover more…

What is the census?

The census takes place in Scotland once every 10 years and every household is legally required to complete it. It asks a range of questions relating to things such as nationality, relationships and employment, and it is usually filled out by one person on behalf of everyone in their household.

All the information collated in the census is completely anonymised but it can play a vital role in helping the government develop policies, plan and run services, and decide how to allocate funds.

How did Scotland’s Census 2022 differ to previous ones?

For the first time ever, Scotland’s Census 2022 asked people to voluntarily declare their sexuality and gender identity. Four options were provided for sexual orientation; straight / heterosexual, gay / lesbian, bisexual, and other. This last option included a free-text box where respondents could write their individual answer if they wish.

Another question asked for the first time was “Do you consider yourself to be trans, or have a trans history?” Again, respondents were given a free-text box to voluntarily fill in however they wished.

Key findings

Some of the stand-out results of the Scotland’s Census 2022 included:

• There were 19,990 people identifying as trans or having a trans history in Scotland. That equates to 0.44% of the over-16 population.
• 45.2% of trans people identified as “non-binary”.
• Almost half of all trans people were aged 16 to 24.
