On 31st March, we’re encouraging everyone to come together to mark International Trans Day of Visibility. It is a day to celebrate trans people and all their valuable contributions to society, as well as raise awareness of the stigma, harassment and discrimination many still sadly face. Read on to discover why we believe this day is so important and get inspired by our suggestions of how you could observe it this year.
7 reasons to celebrate International Trans Day of Visibility
- It shines a light on the many achievements of trans people throughout history. In sport, media, art and culture, there are so many trailblazers – from Canadian soccer player, Quinn, who was the first openly trans athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, to Lynn Conway, the pioneering computer scientist and engineer who influenced a generation of computer chip designers.
- It honours the efforts of those who have fought for trans rights in the past.
- It highlights trans people’s unique experiences, needs and rights.
- It is a great opportunity to educate others about trans issues and break down the many misconceptions that still exist today, helping to build understanding and empathy amongst those who are not trans.
- It draws attention to the negativity that many trans people unfortunately still endure. For example, 51% of trans people have hidden their identity at work for fear of discrimination. And nearly 7 in 10 trans young people have been subjected to death threats at school.
- It can inspire those who previously didn’t have the courage to come out as trans to finally live their life to the fullest.
- It can help to promote a more open, welcoming, gender-inclusive society.
If all this sounds like something you’d like to get onboard with, there are lots of ways you can show your support on International Trans Day of Visibility.
